Driving in winter
Driving in extreme weather conditions can be very dangerous, follow our safety tips to prevent any accidents this winter.
Prepare your vehicle
- Make sure your vehicle is road worthy prior to winter. Arrange a service and check both the tyre pressure and tread every month
- Make sure that batteries aren’t faulty and if you're in any doubt get it checked
- Clear ice or snow completely from windows, mirrors and lights before you set off and always make sure the windscreen washer fluid is topped up
- Keep your windows clear of condensation before you set off, make sure your heaters are blowing hot air to keep windows clear
Plan your journey
Avoid driving if weather conditions are extreme but if you must drive plan regular breaks and take an emergency snow kit with you, this should include:
- Jump leads
- Shovel
- Ice scraper
- First aid kit
- Warm clothing
- Torch
- Food and water
- Sturdy boots or wellingtons
- Cat litter or sand
- Mobile phone and charger
Driving in ice and snow
- Drive with care even on treated roads
- Keep well back from the vehicle in front
- Watch out for snowploughs which may throw out snow on either side
- Be prepared for the road conditions to change over relatively short distances
- Don't risk driving through deep floodwater
Driving in fog
- Do not use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced as they can dazzle other road users and obscure your brake lights (only use when visibility is less than 100metres)
- Make sure you can stop within the distance you can see ahead, especially on motorways and dual carriageways
- Use your windscreen wipers and demisters to keep your view clear
- Beware of other drivers who may not be using headlights
